What is EMV?

EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa. EMV is a global payment standard with a set of specifications aimed at providing strong card security and cardholder validation at the point of sale (POS) through the use of chip-based cards and EMV technology to authenticate chip-card transactions. EMV is simply, a technical standard that ensures chip-based payment cards and terminals are compatible around the world. EMV specifications are managed, maintained and enhanced by EMVCo LLC, a governing body that is made up of representatives from all major card brands; Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, Discover, and Union Pay.
